A Few Words About Me

I’m Noel Atzmiller, a technical writer and editor with 38 years of experience in technical communications. For the past 16 years, I had the privilege of working in a major oilfield services company—an experience that turned out to be one of the most exciting chapters of my career.

Not long after I joined the company, the President came across some articles I had written about the history of an important oilfield device and its inventor. He was impressed by the research and writing—and asked me to lead a project to create a book documenting the company’s 75-year history. That assignment launched me into a deep dive through decades of technical documents, patents, industry articles, and historical photographs.

I uncovered far more material than could ever fit into the book, and what I found was too fascinating to ignore. So, I began writing additional articles, focusing on the origins of key tools and services. These were later published in oil and gas industry magazines—and with each piece I wrote, my fascination with the early development of oilfield technology grew.

That’s what brings me here. Through this blog, I want to share the stories, discoveries, and engineering breakthroughs that I’ve found so inspiring. Whether you’re a tech history buff, an engineer, or someone who just enjoys information about innovation, I hope you’ll find something here that sparks your interest as much as it has sparked mine.

Thanks for visiting—and I’m glad you’re here!

About the Blog

Oilfield Tech Origins is a place to explore the origins and early development of some key oilfield technologies—innovative tools that helped shape the modern energy industry. Each post on this blog will offer a brief, engaging look at how a specific tool or service came to be—often in response to a practical challenge in the field. My goal is to capture the technical ingenuity and the human creativity behind these advancements.

For my first posts, I’ve chosen to focus on shaped charges—a vital technology in oilfield perforation. By drawing from patents, technical papers, books, and industry magazine articles, I’ll explore the origin of shaped charges, explain how they work, and highlight some of the challenges they present. These posts will also shine a light on the creativity and determination of the individuals who adapted this powerful technology for safe and effective use in commercial oilfield operations.

I welcome your comments, questions, and stories—especially if you’ve worked with or have firsthand knowledge of the technologies featured here.

Let’s dig into the history, one innovation at a time.
